I do have trouble grasping the concepts of certain things... or perhaps I am cursed by the Zippo gods!? As my standard Zippo doesn't work worth a frig as well. But I understand they're not Bics and last forever. Gotta refill them often. It's the price of looking cool with a Zippo, man!
Tired of refueling every other day, I thought a butane torch would likely, possibly last longer. Ha! And if my process of filling this thing was correct.... turn screw on bottom to open slightly and stick butane canister thing into lighter hole, push in few second intervals to fill it til I got a little cool spray (can be real cold, be careful) on my hand and ASSUMED it was full. Even gave it a little bump open more in case it was TOO full, then tightened it (not all the way!) DId a couple light pushes on the igniter, again to release any excess gas in case too full... then... CLICK!
...and nothing. Repeat like ten times. Tried refilling it using slightly alternate methods. Turning it open a little more... having it a little tighter... eventually I got it to work! Aaaaaaand it lasted about a day. Not even. Crapped out halfway through work... I'm talking like... maybe five cigs?
Afterwards, I was like "You know what? I'm quite unconcerned with people's perception of my smoke-lighting ability in regards to my coolness. Besides, I always look like a fool when I mess up trying to do that flip-open trick... and I got all these Bics. They work every time! I don't need this to justify my awesomeness!" And I've become a better person for it.
In reality, I was probably just filling it wrong. First time I filled a normal zippo, I took all the cotton out of the bottom and poured the fluid in... Hey, I was quite young at the time! Or maybe it was a problem with the spark. As I could hear the gas, but when it DID work I had to click it multiple times to get it to light.
Whether it was user error or product malfunction, I ain't got time to be messing with it all day and went for what works.
Unfortunately it will not even last a year. I'm not sure why but a group of us bought these from Amazon at the same time after a friend of ours bought it and we loved it. All of ours quit working within a year's time except for one and the guy is so religious about cleaning it it's unreal. They are very neat and work very well while they do work. I would honestly buy one again they're not that expensive so for $13 a year I am still pleased enough to purchase another one. I'm not sure of technical terms here so you'll have to excuse me if I right the wrong thing here. The main problem is with the igniter as there is no way to change or fix it once it stops working. The only other problems seem to be easily fixed by letting it sit for a day or quickly and gently cleaning it. Like I said will not last a year but while it works it works great and make Zippos way way more usable than they already were.
UPDATE: Sadly this is too unreliable. Too often I have found myself getting about 1 second of flame each time I press the button. It’s full of gas and I can hear gas coming out but the flame just goes out. I’ve ended up abandoning it in favour of a yellow flame insert for my Zippo and a separate single jet torch lighter.
Brings a new lease of life to my old Zippo. Petrol lighters are useless for lighting a cigar but you just can’t beat the feel of a Zippo. How many hours have I spent just playing with the thing absentmindedly in my hand. Opening and closing the lid. Now I can keep using the outer shell and swap the innards for a modern dual head butane torch. Brilliant. What’s not to love.
Fully refilled lasts a couple of days max with the flame size to low. The design and flame though its really good, yet the attention to detail in design as an insert for a famous lighter brand needs much work, with this insert your zippo will not fully close as its too big, a 2mm gap will remain. to keep as a cigar only lighter in rare occasions its ok. To use as everyday lighter not good.
I was expecting so much more from Zippo. They claim 100 lights from the single jet flame and 60 lights from the double flame. I get a pack of smokes and thats about it. I have to pack a 2nd lighter because it doesn't last the day. the small size of the zippo is why it can only hold a small amount of fuel, I get it. its just disappointing that it wont last a whole day.
So the long tradition of “American” companies outsourcing all manufacturing to China continues in earnest.
“Oh, it’s a Zippo.” Well no, it’s dang well not. It FEELS cheaply made. It’s zinc, not stainless. Feels plastiky and cheap. Outside of the zippo logo, it also looks cheaply made.
So, the (marginally) good: well, it works, sorta. Filling it is a pain. First few times it was so tedious, I thought the filler valve was blocked. Turns out, it’s just a trash design. I needed a small butane lighter for work; to melt the frayed ends of braided wire loom. Well, in order to get an adequate fill, I have to turn the flame height knob to its lowest setting, press the igniter switch, and then start filling the reservoir, otherwise, no go. And I used 3 different butane filler cans to make sure the first two weren’t somehow depressurized (they weren’t). As for the flame height adjuster....well, the lighter only works on the upper end of the setting. Like, 55%-100%. Any setting under the 55% mark, and the lighter with simply spark and flame and immediately extinguish. So, yeah it’s awesome refilling the thing 4-5 times a day (and having a larger stationary torch won’t work for what I need as my cabling is done in the field). So, it’s a (once great) American made product, now made in sweatshops halfway around the world for an extra 5% margin pop for shareholders. Sad, but typical. Certainly the last Zippo I buy.
