For a while now I’ve been looking for a book series to be utterly swept away by. After weeks of mediocre (but enjoyable) reads I came across Divergent, via a YouTube comment. Compelled, I Googled the title and became further enamoured with its concept. I needed the book immediately, so I ordered it without a second thought and here we are today. My gut instinct was on the money with this series and I am obsessed, much the way I was beginning The Hunger Games series.

Five stars normally seems excessive, but not for Divergent. I literally could not put it down. The premise is a dystopian world where all citizens are split into one of five factions on their sixteenth birthday. These five factions are based on a prevailing trait or way of living: Abnegation (selflessness), Amity (peacefulness), Candor (honesty), Dauntless (bravery) and Erudite (intelligence). The mantra of the world is faction over blood, so when you choose your loyalty switches.

For a dystopian novel some might say it is strange that this is all we know about this world, the what and not the why, but I found it oddly satisfying and found myself easily being swept away into this society despite not knowing how it came to be. The whole process is gripping: the aptitude test, the Choosing Ceremony and the initiation. I felt hungry to know how each stage went and where the next one would head. I couldn’t stop after completing one; I needed to keep going.

I also get the overwhelming sense that the lack of world building is intentional and that we aren’t meant to know much of the city’s history purely because its own citizens don’t know. We are only supposed to know as much as the characters and it becomes quite clear early on that they don’t know a lot. This helps to see the society through their eyes, bias and all, and means that any later revelations (which I know will come) will be a surprise to us as well as our cast. It is claustrophobic and closed-off, heightening the sense of danger.

That is just the setting, just the society. This is before the plot, characters or relationships come into play. I utterly lost myself at the start and from then on in it was action-packed, pacey and heart-wrenching. Our MC is sixteen-year-old Beatrice (later Tris) who leaves Abnegation (and her parents) for Dauntless. I loved her. She felt real to me, your typical sixteen-year-old with typical concerns, which was very refreshing from those MCs who are automatically self-assured or badass (Rose Hathaway and Katniss Everdeen).

Some criticise Tris for being weak, but I never felt that. She is popular, but not hated. She doesn’t cause people to fall in love with her or like her instantly upon meeting them, she has a good mixture of friends and enemies, she doesn’t automatically become badass upon choosing Dauntless but earns it by working hard to cover her weaknesses. She is all in all a very real girl, with very real fears. I loved her narrative voice and love seeing this world from inside her head, biases and all.

Most of all I loved how the (inevitable) romance side of things was handled. The word I’d choose is organic. There was no instalove (a pet peeve of mine in YA novels) and the plot was never jeopardised for the sake of the growing relationship. It creeped up on our MC and started tentatively, carefully. By the end of Divergent it is just starting, an utter strength of the book to not go all goo-goo-eyed at the first sign of attraction. Again, very realistic and very much how you’d expect a teenage romance to go. All the teenaged couples in Divergent are realistic and nothing like the proclamations of eternal love other YA books dish out on a regular occurrence.

Finally, the plot itself. Divergent mostly focuses on Tris and her friends as they progress through the Dauntless initiation, but you definitely get a sense of tensions rising in the mechanics of their world. You start out with a perfect system (to the characters) and learn about its flaws the more Tris experiences of it. Therefore, I never felt that all the major plot elements were rammed in at the end. I felt that the explosion of action at the end was natural and a result of a well-paced novel. There were many twists and turns that I didn’t expect, which added to the drive to devour this book in record time.

Overall it is punchy and brilliant paced, the plot and action creeping, creeping until you are thrown head first into a dangerous world. It is emotional and pulls at your heartstrings at the right moments. I get the sense that we’ll learn more about this world as the series progresses and that we’ll find not everything is as it seems. Right now though Divergent has set the bar very high for the other books and I can’t wait until I get my hands on Insurgent. An absolutely fantastic novel.

Chicago is divided into five factions in order to further prevent an outbreak of war. Each faction follows a certain personality tribute. Abnegation encourages selflessness, Amity encourages peace, Erudite encourages intelligence, Candor encourages honesty and Dauntless encourages bravery. Each faction believes that following the ways of their faction creates a 'perfect' society. Every person in society goes through Choosing Day. A day when you can either choose to stay in the faction you have grown up in, or leave and choose a different one. Beatrice Prior never felt that she was selfless enough and chooses to leave her family behind and join Dauntless whilst also hiding the fact that she is Divergent; someone who can't be confined into one faction and can fit into others. Being a Divergent is dangerous, dangerous enough to get you killed. Can Tris survive the Dauntless initiation, hide the fact that she is Divergent and figure out her growing feelings for her Dauntless training instructor, Four?

I had seen this book around and heard about its massive popularity and so after many recommendations i decided to give this book a shot. I will admit that I was reluctant because I thought it would be similar to the Hunger Games (which although I hadn't read, I did watch the movie and HATED IT. Yes, I know to never judge the book by the movie. Sorry guys, I will never do that again!)

I read the first chapter and frankly, felt lost. Factions? Amity? Dauntless? What is this author ON about?!
So I decided to give up reading it (NO YOU PEANUT BRAIN DON'T!! GIVE IT A CHANCE!) It wasn't until I watched the movie did I fall in love with the story. The action, the drama, the whole world that was created. But I knew movies don't often reflect how amazing books are so I went back to the book again. Only to finish it in a day...

Once I gave this book a second chance I found that I had fallen in love with it. Love is putting it lightly, I found that I was daydreaming about it a lot when I wasn't reading it. Which in a sense shows how good a book is if it's constantly making you think about it. Tris was a confident and very well thought out main protagonist. Placed in a situation where she ultimately has to either choose her family or choose herself, I loved the fact that she was smart and had wit. Her character itself made it very interesting to read and I was surprised by the amount of depth that she had in her character. Four (Tris' love interest) is very mysterious and masculine which I loved. Throughout the book you don't really get much from his character, with very little detail being revealed to the audience about who he is. But towards the end of the book you understand why he is who he is.

One thing I will say is that the romance in this book felt a little out of nowhere. A lot of the time dystopian books force a romance in there. I didn't MIND the romance between Four and Tris, in fact I really loved it and was rooting for it by the end of the book. But i felt that there could have been a better build up to them forming their relationship. I understand that Roth may have wanted to portray their relationship as a 'slow burner', but if that was the case then there should have been more small interactions with them to actually create a build up. By the end of the book I was like any other Four obsessed girl and was fully all for the relationship, but not convinced on the way that it was built up.

So overall it's safe to say I have jumped on the bandwagon of Divergent lovers!

4,0 av 5 stjärnor My thoughts on Veronica Roth's Divergent

I purchased this while in a "dystopian novel" frenzy, having just completed the (phenomenal) The Hunger Games trilogy. I was searching for something similar and, while the writing style is unremarkable and not as competent as Collins', I'd say I found it. Though far from brilliant, I was engrossed enough to finish it in a short time because I felt that the plot sustained the narrative.

One problem I encountered, however, was Beatrice, later known as Tris. Though I didn't dislike Tris, I failed to see why Roth could not come up with a more interesting female protagonist. Sure, she is strong, independent and feisty, thus earning my respect - but she has no quirks, sense of humour or personal interests. I didn't find myself feeling much warmth towards her.
I grasp that this could be partly attributed to the fact that her faction, Abnegation (America has been split into factions - I won't go into specifics - that's what the blurb is for :P) stands for selflessness, meaning that Tris has not had an opportunity to "find" herself, but it felt like more of a cop out on Roth's part.

Also, *spoiler!* I was rather irritated and beguiled by the fact that men almost immediately develop a strong attraction towards her, despite being lead to believe that she is plain and initially very quiet. This may sound cruel, but I don't find this believable. I also *another spoiler!* found her romance with a character called Four (otherwise known as Tobias) rather predictable. And as many of us know, it's often the unexpected pairings that are the most interesting and passionate.

Having said all of this, the idea of the five factions and the core virtues they stand for is, well, what's the best word...cool! It really allows the reader to suss out where their own loyalties would lie where they living in such a world, rather like with Harry Potter - many fans strongly identify with, say, Gryffindor, even going so far as to wear the scarf and badge. Would it be Dauntless the brave, Candor the honest, Erudite the intelligent, Abnegation the selfless or Amity the peaceful? Or maybe, instead, they'd be Divergent...

The development of this post-apocolyptic world needs a little work, generally coming across as a little too simple to accept, but, overall, Veronica Roth's Divergent has the components of a successful and entertaining novel: danger, romance, friendship, adventure and life or death dilemmas. And I've ordered the second one! :D

Veronica Roth's haunting vision of the future is shiveringly exciting, for it astonished me utterly when I contemplated the enormity and scope of this incredible creation. This has to be the most refreshingly original, innovative and inspired work of Young Adult fiction that I have encountered in ages, with a unique outlook on Dystopian. This well written and brilliantly executed story is something that is not to be missed, and so I highly urge readers to take a look...

"She turns to face the future in a world that's falling apart"

Sixteen-year-old Tris is forced to make a terrible choice in a supremely singular society, where everyone must conform regardless of whether they `fit' or not. She bravely ventures out alone, determined to discover where she truly belongs in a shocking new life filled with danger and tough choices.

Society is split into five factions ~ Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent) and Dauntless (the brave). Tris is forced to choose between her family and staying true to herself. When she chooses to remain as herself, those whom she loves are threatened by a great secret and her future is in jeopardy as she falls in love with a perplexing individual: Four.

Favorite Quotes ~

"...valuing knowledge above all else results in a lust for power, and that leads men into dark empty places. We should be thankful that we know better" - Mr. Prior

"We believe that preparation eradicates cowardice, which we define as the failure to act in the midst of fear..." - Four

"I am no longer Tris the selfless or Tris the brave. I suppose that now, I must become more than either" - Tris

Thought-provoking, enriching and powerfully evocative this exceptional novel is so profoundly meaningful that I was quite entranced by it, as to be moved to tears. Never before have I encountered within the YA genre something quite so exquisitely detailed and which contains such heartfelt connotations within, that is so substantial and rich. Divergent is a captivating, fascinating book that kept me in constant suspense and was never short on surprises. Tris is the sort of unflinching and fierce heroine that I love to read about, for her outstanding courage and determined resolve is something that one can really admire and aspire to. She is a teenage role model that many readers will love; hence the combination of colorful characters with spectacular vision is what makes this such a remarkable novel.

Action-packed, intensely thrilling and an emotionally honest journey that is sincere and insightful, this is dystopian fiction at its very best!

I was lucky enough to win this book from a giveaway on Gothic Angel Book Reviews. I had heard so much about this book so I was looking forward to finally checking it out for myself.

During the first few pages I felt like there was a lot of information thrown at me all at once, this wasn't necessarily a bad thing because it was things I needed to know, I just felt a little overwhelmed by it.

The author had created a future world where the city was divided up into factions and each faction had its own set of duties/rules depending on the character traits of each faction: Abnegation - selflessness, Dauntless - bravery, Erudite - intelligence, Candor - honesty, and Amity - peacefulness. The aptitude test determined which faction each sixteen year old would be most suitable for and I found this fascinating especially when I realised that they didn't have to choose the faction that their responses favoured! It was around this time that the word Divergent came up but it didn't give much information about it so throughout the book I tried to find out what it was all about.

After Tris chose her faction and began the initiation process I got the feeling she felt a bit out of her depth, that all changed though as her character developed in strength and knowledge. She actually seemed to grow before my eyes, fighting her way through her new life and facing her fears head-on. She was a character that I took to my heart so when she showed an interest in Four I was keen to see where it would lead her. There was an electric energy between the two of them even when he wasn't being nice to her, this made their time together very exciting for me as the reader - it was definitely one of my favourite parts and something I look forward to more of in the next book Insurgent. So many dramatic things happened towards the end that when I closed the book I had to take a breath and let my mind replay everything - it certainly hints at the next book being even more exciting and full of action!

I couldn't get enough of this book and didn't want it to end, it was so visual for me - almost like watching a movie which is handy seeing as the movie is already planned for 2014!

Divergent was a dark, exciting and action-packed read, with a dash of romance thrown in to make it a perfect all-rounder.

This book is just...
16-year-old Beatrice lives in a society that has been divided into five factions. Now it is hers and the rest of her classmates to take a test that is supposed to help with the decision of whether they should stay in the faction they were born in or move to a completely different one. After Beatrice's test results come back unusual, she has to decide herself about which faction she wants to spend the rest of her life. The Amity and be forever peaceful, Abnegation and carry on her selfless life, the Erudite to the intelligent, the Cando the honest, or the Dauntless to the brave.
I think if I were in the same position I would want to mix in some Amity and some Dauntless mostly for the tattoos and piercings. But then again it's hard for me to choose which chocolate bar to eat first so I don't think I would make the right decision.
I still cannot get over how much I loved this book. From the style of the writing to the characters, to the action and back to the characters. Did I mention I love Four? No. Well I do! Where can I get one?! Tris is an amazing female character. She is weak and unsure of herself and then becomes this amazing fighting machine that's still scared at times but hides it really well. I just love the way that she transforms and that I get to be there to see it happen. I'm not too keen on characters that are just born amazing. What's the fun in that? I knew straight away from the very first time Tris met Four that there would be something between them. I just love their relationship!
Seriously this is the best quote the summarise their relationship
"Fine. You're not pretty. So?" He kisses my cheek.
Not to mention what this bit of the book did to me-"I might be in love with you." He smiles a little. "I'm waiting until I'm sure to tell you, though." I wanted to sit in a corner and just turn into mush; that's how much I love this quote!!!
Veronica delivers this amazing new world that takes you by your hands and pulls you in from the very first chapter. I'm mesmerised by the precision of her book. I even tried to find some faults in the book; like Tris being Divergent and that not really being explained but then bam, it's explained very well. Or some faults with their plans or even the way some characters spoke but still I haven't found anything. This book made me tear up, cringe badly, laugh out loud, smile at stupid moments and my heart race when there was any action.
"Peter would probably throw a party if I stopped breathing.'
'Well,' he says, 'I would only go if there was cake."- have I proved that this book is pretty much more than amazing?! That I want to give away everything just so I can erase my love for the book so I can read it again and be able to fall in love with it all over again?

Just finished reading Divergent and I've got to say I LOVED IT! *SPOILER ALERT*

I loved the idea that people could be put into 5 different factions based on your personality. Loads of people when reading the reviews on Amazon complained that it was unrealistic to put people into these factions so "easily". Is it unrealistic to think that a person will only be selfless and not brave. To be honest and not intelligent..yes it is unrealistic because nobody is just one of these. However is it unrealistic to believe that after years and years of this system being in affect and being told that they can only be one type of faction, that the whole population would follow this and believe that they themselves can only be one "personality trait" for the rest of their lives? I think so, yes.

I loved how brutal the Dauntless faction were. They were literally insane. I certainly wouldn't have been the first to jump off a building, I'm not even brave enough to jump off a train! I hope that in Insurgent they develop the Candor and Amity factions a bit more, though the way the story left off, i can see that the probability of this happening is high. A lot of people also said that they were annoyed that Roth literally just wrote about the futuristic Chicago and didn't mention anything about the world outside of it. I kind of liked that she didn't, it feels like she's building up to the reveal of the rest of the world. The whole book was dedicated to the initiation process and then right at the end the "war/revolution" started. I loved the war scenes but I felt they were a bit rushed a maybe could have been left for the next book?

Moving on to the characters. I liked Tris, she was a bit, look at me i'm small and cute and need protection at first. And I kinda found that a bit annoying, but after a while I grew to like her character. I LOVE four. His character is tough, cool and loveable. He helps Tris the whole way through even when she's too stupid to realise. There are a lot of creepy characters that do some really quite horrible things throughout the book. All I'm saying is I hate things to do with eyes *vomits*

Overall I loved this book! I literally read it in two days it was that good. I will most definitely be buying the second and third books in the trilogy.

Would I recommend it: Hell yes! Definitely read it if you liked the hunger games!

3,0 av 5 stjärnor An interesting but ultimately untenable premise, a little lacking in detail

Divergent has many of the characteristics associated with dystopian fiction, particularly that aimed at the young adult market: a female teenage protagonist, a romantic interest who has take second place to the rather more pressing task of uncovering the secrets of the regime, questionable authority figures and a cliffhanger ending.

We are plunged into the action immediately, as Beatrice prepares for the aptitude test which will tell her which faction of the city she is best suited to (a bit like the Sorting Hat in Harry Potter): Abnegation, the faction she's grown up in, which believes in selflessness; Amity, which believes in friendship and peace; Candor, which believes in honesty and truth; Dauntless, which believes in bravery and fearlessness; or Erudite, which believes in intelligence and the pursuit of knowledge. The following day, Beatrice will have to choose whether to do as her parents expect and stay in Abnegation, or whether to transfer and effectively cut all ties to her family. The aptitude test should help her make this decision, but Beatrice's results are irregular and hint at fractures in the city and the faction system that she'd never suspected.

As she trains to become a fully-fledged member of her chosen faction, Tris (as she prefers to be called) learns more about the beliefs and customs of the different factions. Each has been established in response to a perceived fault of humanity which led to wars and conflict throughout history, and each contributes to society in its own defined way. At the same time, Tris learns more about herself: she's always struggled with the selflessness required of Abnegation, but comes to realise that selflessness and courage are not so far apart; she is forced to confront the cold, calculating streak that runs through her; and she struggles to understand her feelings towards Four, who coaches the trainees through initiation.

The concept of a society divided into factions is initially interesting, but ultimately untenable. People simply can't be divided into one of five character traits, to the exclusion of all others. In other dystopian fiction, such as Unwind or The Hunger Games, the regime imposes questionable practices but the majority of people struggle with the morality of those practices. Even if they are not pro-actively rebelling, they are not just happily going along with things. But in Divergent, the people who struggle with the idea of the factions are in the minority. On top of this, the faction system was supposedly introduced to avoid future wars, despite history teaching us that segregation itself generally breeds conflict.

The world created by Veronica Roth is not as fully developed as I'd have liked - it's hard to build a picture of what it's really like. The details of the factions themselves and the landscape of the city are fairly superficial. Actually, the overall sense I got from the novel was almost video-game-like, particularly in the training sessions and some of the later action sequences. I also kept asking myself whether this faction system is in place in other cities, or just isolated to this particularly city - it was frustrating not knowing more about how and why this system evolved, although I suspect this is part of the story arc of the whole trilogy.

Divergent is an action-packed novel, in which things and people are rarely what they seem. Families are torn apart, communities are destroyed and lots of innocent people die. But other - more positive - themes run through it as well, including friendship and loyalty, hope and love. This is not the most sophisticated novel in its genre, but for the first offering from 23-year-old Veronica Roth, it's definitely good enough to make me read the sequel, Insurgent.

In the words of Danny Glover 'I'm too old for this s***' (and if you know what I'm talking about, you are too) but MAN I love all this YA dystopian stuff! The Hunger Games had me completely obsessed throughout the last Christmas holidays (much to my family's annoyance) and I completely devoured Patrick Ness' Chaos Walking after that. And then, after much careful research because, you know, I'm 37, I decided to give Divergent a go.

It's great! A little relentless at times and it's a bit unnecessarily brutal too, but I really enjoyed this. Even though I'm old.

I hate to compare but I was looking for a Hunger Games replacement and so you might be too so ... it's up there. Great story, completely engaging proposal made absolutely believable by a wonderfully imagined world. Lead character wise, Tris can be 'yeah, whatever, I'm just plain and small and rubbish. Why does everyone think I'm AMAZING?' which gets a bit wearing - see ANY Dickens heroine for the worst type of female character, Tris was sometimes a little too Dickensian for my liking. I preferred Katniss - she's a bit more rounded and a bit less self-effacing. But maybe that's just me. And Tris does man up as it goes along. On the plus side, it was less mormon than HG, in that there is proper relationship-style lovin'.

BUT these are two different books and it's unfair on Roth to compare so I'll stop there. This is a great story, well imagined and surprisingly subtle. And I LOVED the name Four. It's now on my baby-list.

Would recommend to any readers who want to be transported to a darker world where freedom and choice are not as readily available as they are today.

Talented writer, amazing imagination = hugely satisfying story. Thank GOD for trilogies!

As I write there are so many review already, so why am I writing another? Because I love this book and it is one of my favourites so far this year.
'Divergent' is a brilliant story and is well written. It grips from the first line - ''There is one mirror in my house''. By the end of page one, you know that the narrator is at odds with her world - ''(My mother) is well practiced in the art of losing herself. I can't say the same about myself.'' This is re-enforced later - ''When I look at the Abnegation lifestyle as an outsider, I think it's beautiful...It's only when I try to live it myself that I have trouble.''
I loved Tris the small girl with big heart who is more a product of her upbringing than she realises; and I found the fragility of the friendships she made interesting as they echo the fragility of her society.
The story moves along at a cracking pace, not unlike Tris zipping down the Hancock building on a wire, and there are some wonderful emotive descriptions - ''the Hub - emerges from the fog, a black pillar in the skyline'', ''A pale ring of sunlight burns into the clouds like the end of a lit cigarette'', ''A look I can only describe as Dauntless mania enters his eyes, but rather than recoil from it,...I catch it like it's contagious'', ''My heart beats so hard it hurts, and I can't scream and I can't breathe, but I also feel everything, every vein and every fiber, every bone and every nerve, all awake and buzzing in my body as if charged with electricity,. I am pure adrenaline.'' - (Tris zipping down the Hancock building). This book is a heck of a ride and I recommend it.
