This combines the original H.G. Wells novel, the complete script of the Orson Welles radio adaptation, and a CD containing the complete program as originally aired over the CBS Radio Network on October 30th, 1938.
Anyone who is a fan of H.G. Welles, any version of "The War Of The Worlds", or old-time radio should have this book and CD combination.
By the way, the series on which the radio version of "War Of The Worlds" aired, "The Mercury Theatre On The Air", wasn't sponsored by Mercury automobiles. It was named after the Mercury Theatre troupe, whose actors made up the casts of this and the series' other presentations.
"Mercury Theatre" didn't have a sponsor at the time of "War Of The Worlds", hence, the only commercial came at the station break some 40 minutes into the show. The fact the show didn't have a sponsor may actually have contributed to the mass panic around the country. Had the show been sponsored, an announcer would have come on before each break to inform listeners that they were hearing a dramatization that would continue following "a message from our sponsor". And after the commercial, the announcer would have noted that "we now return to this dramatization of 'War Of The Worlds'". Many more listeners would have realized that this was a drama.
Before long, Campbell Soup started sponsoring "Mercury Theatre" and the show became "Campbell Playhouse". It's my understanding that the show remained one of radio's most prestigious dramatic series under Campbell sponsorship, and helped to make it's cast---especially Welles and John Houseman---world-famous superstars.
