It's an appalling book, full of 'stock' characters that have escaped from a third rate sitcom, with a 'hero' so pathetically weak and the most unbelievable cliche 'baddies' .
At least the cat survived this drivel.
There is not one believable character in this book. Spend your hard earned money on Ian Rankin instead, that's an author who knows how to create a story.
Elliot has a house on Cuckoo Lane, impulsively marries Gemma and along come Gemma's Cuckoo family who take over Elliot's nest.
That was a bit too obvious for me.
But it's a decent, fluffy read if you are happy to suspend belief. Finishes with a twist which I liked but in retrospect-
MILD SPOILER ALERT -
there are a few situations that occur, that are very serious, yet at the end of the book it's left hanging - what happened after? Just forgotten - another "accident" the police don't care to dig further into? Elliot at the scene of two major crimes and it's coincidence?? Especially as the police are personally affected in one incident - c'mon, they'd never let it rest.
I would have written this as a dark comedy. Two much suspension of belief required and "why didn't he just...." psychological horror needs no escape for it to fully work and this family are horrors. And there is lot Elliot could have done like hire some heavies to remove them, for goddess sakes, but does not.
I could see the Lifetime Channel making this into a TV movie -
married at first sight - in laws from hell - what will the hero do? With major holes in the story but you don't care because it's a soap opera film.
