As a practitioner in the field of Anti-Social behaviour I am always aware of the negative and sometimes destructive consequences that hate is responsible for. I never really had a sense of how it builds and at what stage it begins to manifest itself within the person in whom it develops.
This book carefully and comprehensively takes the reader through the biological, the personal and the social and communal to explain exactly what it is that is happening when hate starts to take hold. Whilst there is a great deal of academic coverage the author’s writing style is engaging and easy to follow.
This would in itself be reason for a positive review but what elevates this book for me is the fact that, for very personal reasons which are sensitively and openly laid bare, the book focuses on the very much more difficult questions of how to identify and challenge the rise of hate and prejudice within ourselves and in others. Having considered hate in an objective manner in the first section of the book it gives the reader the ability to reflect and recognise what one can do personally to make a difference whether it is to address personal prejudices or to be emboldened to call out indicative behaviour in others.
Ultimately, if you think that prejudice is a factor that affects you or any of the people around you and this sits uneasily with you then you’d be well advised to pick up this book and I’m confident you won’t be disappointed.

A fascinating insight into the prejudices people hold.Granskad i Storbritannien den 26 maj 2021
I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in the darker side of human behaviour and the science behind it. It also includes largely unknown cases of hate and discrimination across the globe that will truly shock. A must read!

The current narrative focuses on how technology is disseminating and amplifying hate in the digital world. This narrative forgets where hate comes from: individual biases and prejudices. The Science of Hate is an enjoyable overview of the psychology and sociology of hate, with personal examples that make technical / academic concepts real and palpable. It also provides an overview of how technology leads to polarization, radicalization and offline hate crimes. I highly recommend it!
