This second book in Hamilton’s trilogy is totally different to the first. A huge fan of this writer, I was a little perplexed by the first book, Salvation - in hindsight, it read as a sort of noir’ish whodunnit melded with the kind of expansive and ambitious world building you’d expect. The pace was deliberate, methodical.
This book is like a slap in the face. Having successfully used the first book to lay the characters and plot foundations, this story hits the ground running and simply keeps going. It’s utterly frenetic. If the first was a whodunnit, this second is a weknowwhodunnit and now it’s time to kick ass - across time, space, wherever there is ass to be kicked!
As ever, Hamilton just has an incredible knack of nailing people, characters that say and do believable things while always subverting expectatIon and constantly surprising. Stunning.

I'm a life long fan of most of Peter Hamilton's writing and whilst this is not my favorite of his novels I still enjoyed it. It is fairy normal mid-trilogy fare adding to the events of the first book as you'd expect. The story does jump around from one time period to another but it keeps them separate for the most part and you only really see then stories start to connect towards the end. It is as you'd expect building towards the final book. An enjoyable read with a couple of faster paced sections but primarily it is filling in details the first book left you wondering about and world buiding. It still has left me with a desire to read the last installment as I do want to know how the story ends.
