I also ordered a 'Ruffwear Brush Guard' for this harness, which fits onto the underside of the harness, and gives him more padding around his chest and belly area and also gives him some protection if he needs to lie down or is in longer grass, on a walk. I found that this seems to make the harness even more comfortable for him and seems to provide a slightly better fit when in place. The harness is excellent quality and very strong and secure when fitted.
The only downside that I have found with this harness, is that it only has clips on one side, so that when you are putting the harness on, the dogs right front leg and head have to go in the harness first, before the rest of the harness can be clipped in place. This would be ok for a completely able bodied dog, but for a dog with 3 legs, you have to ensure that he is in the sitting position first, as he is unable to balance on 2 legs while this is being done. It would have been ideal if the harness had both a clip on the left and right hand side of the neck, so that no front legs needed to be lifted in order to put the harness on.
My boy is 10 1/2 years old and is full of life. He does brilliantly on 3 legs and loves his new harness. He still pulls on the lead and is really speedy !! He plays with my younger dog and is still being 'naughty' at the age of 10 1/2 years ! He is on a Raw Diet and has his herbal supplements alongside this, to help him with his diagnosis and joints. I am so glad that I made the decision to go ahead with the amputation and it is very noticeable that he is not in pain anymore. I would highly recommend this harness for a rear leg amputee dog.
My first dog had a 'near miss' situation twice next to a very busy road where she slipped her collar. I can tell you that both incidents caused major panic for me and my family. Both my wife and youngest son were crying. So this inspired me to do a bit of research and then I stumbled on this harness.
Easy to put on and impossible to escape from, my worries and reassurance of quality were satisfied as soon as it arrived.
Yes it is expensive, but the price is irrelevant when you consider the quality and design of this harness, especially if you are worried about your dog's pulling and tendency to wrestle with a standard collar.
So now I have a new wee puppy companion for our beloved Springer, and this harness was the first item I bought for him even though he is probably four months away from actually fitting into it.
As far as I am concerned this harness is ESSENTIAL!
It's not good enough to lift her while stationary ( she's 42 kilos) but standing back 6 feet or so then moving her forward she attempts a leap in & I lift her at the same time with the handle & she's in the jeep effortlessly & comfortably. I'm surprised how easy it is to lift her with it. Prior to this harness she could get her front legs up & I had to physically lift the rest of her which was back breaking. She wouldn't use a ramp or steps ( tried both) so this harness is a God send.
Good fit & there is an inch elastic at the top of each strap so when your dog sits or lays down the harness doesn't pinch or become too tight. Secure & sturdy. And good for general walking also.
I also purchased one for my border collie who has arthritis. She was borderline on measurements between small & medium. I ordered both & the small was a much better fit. The company do say if they're borderline then go down a size & they're right.
Side Note .... If your dogs hips are so bad that he/she can't even attempt to leap up & forward then I suggest purchasing a "Helpemup" harness which I also have. ( Not available on Amazon, Google it) . This is also helpful for dogs with spinal myelopathy.
After getting a new puppy and having to deal with months of it escaping harnesses I finally decided to splash the cash now that it's fully grown. At first I though £50 for a harness was ridiculous but after getting it I can say it's worth every penny. It's 10x the quality of previous harnesses and there's no way the dog can back out of it. Only down side is how finicky it is to get the right fitment all over, but once you have it there's no issues and that there could be more reflective material for black dogs but that's a simple fix with some reflective tape.
