Needs A Technical Expert, But Otherwise Quite Good

I really enjoyed this book; it has actually been quite a while since I last read an Event book, so I was a bit rusty on the characters and the plot, but it came back to me as I read. I was able to read about half the book on and off over the last month, but I finally the finished the last half in a marathon read during a long fight. Here's some of my criticisms:

1. David, you need a technical expert, or at least a proofreader, when it comes to military hardware. As a servicemember myself, and an avid firearms enthusiast,I get very frustrated when an author doesn't do a cursory check on the hardware he is writing about. In this book, there are numerous caliber mistakes (7.65mm when 7.62mm needs to be used), hardware mistakes, and designation mistakes (AH-64, not AH-69), just some examples.
2. I am also an astronomy enthusiast, this coupled with the above is what made this book so appealing to me. David, the Hubble space telescope cannot see images in real time millions of light years away. Hence the term "light years." If the Hubble captured these images, it was seeing what was there millions of years ago, not right now. This put a big kink in the book for me, because this was a major point in Overlord and it is simply not possible. Obviously, this series requires a deal of suspension of disbelief. But when an author attempts to make it accurate but then flubs the most basic detail, for me personally, it negatively impacts my enjoyment.
3. I understand shaking some rust off at the beginning of the book, but I don't know quite why the author insists on making sure everyone is introduced in every chapter by their full names. After the first couple chapters, and the series, I know who Will is. I know who Ryan is. etc. etc. But the dialogue is very choppy. If I were to walk into my squadron tomorrow, I would not say, "Tell Major Jack Collins I say hello." No, I would say, "Tell the Major I said hi," or, if I was a friend, "Tell Collins yo." Even in conversation, the characters insist on using title and full name even in casual conversation. I dunno, I guess it's just weird for me is all.
4. The use of the term "brevet" that is completely wrong. Brevets are honorary ranks with no actual authority. Jack and Everett were not a brevet General or brevet Admiral, respectively. What they actually were were temporarily commissioned to a higher rank. Had they been brevets, they would not have been able to hold the commands they were given. I'm sorry, but a basic dictionary query would have nipped this one in the bud.

Okay, those aside, I did really like the book. The plot was solid and I felt there was a nice even flow. I look forward to many more books from this author, and I hope they keep improving as they have been. Good luck!

Overlord is another solid novel from David Lynn Goleman. This is the final novel of the trilogy that included the books, The Event and Legend. The problem that I had is that they were spaced so far apart. The Event was the first book that Goleman wrote and Legend was five or so novels down the road and another couple in between Legend and Overlord. I may not be accurate but I am close. The distance is such that I will probably go back and read Legend again which is not a bad chore.
The story is such that the bad “Grays” are coming back to invade earth. Matchstick has warned the Event Group and developed a plan, Operation Overlord. The plan has a terrible success indicator; however, it is better than total failure. The same characters are around for most of the story. It is sad to see some leave but that is how life in fiction goes. Some time travel wormholes in the story that gets a little confusing but all in all, it kept me awake at night. Looking forward to Goleman and the Event Group’s next challenge.
