This is actually a very realistic scenario where some of the world's top billionaires club together to fund the first mission to Mars.
As usual Ben Bova crafts some really good characters with a entertaining & engaging plot that keeps you coming back to read.
Hope to see the sequel hit the book stories soon.

This is the Most Viable Way to Get Humans to Mars - Private Enterprise!
Granskad i USA den 15 januari 2014Verifierat köp
In this book, Ben Bova presents a very compelling case for having private enterprise take over crewed space exploration. Actually, space exploration always should have been in private hands. It would have been done far better and with less loss of life. But I digress...
The story opens with Art Thrasher, billionaire visionary, going out there and getting twenty billionaires to pledge a billion a year for five years. This hundred billion dollars would likely be enough to outfit a crewed mission to Mars and get them back to Earth. He manages to pull such a group together, and then his battles really get going. NASA is none too keen to have a private venture be successful, and the nuclear agencies get upset when they find out this mission is going to use a nuclear propulsion engine. An act of sabotage threatens to scuttle the mission, but they push on.
Thrasher ends up having to move the equipment launches to Australia, which gets the job done. The crews that put the spacecraft together in orbit are launched out of the spaceport now in existence in New Mexico.
Bova makes this story believable by having a strong human element. The main characters are well fleshed out and have believable motives. Some of the billionaires are very mercenary, as would definitely be the case. Some have said this story is too kind to capitalists. I respectfully disagree. Some of the people depicted in this book are very predatory, and they are all in it to get something for themselves.
I really enjoyed this book! Art Thrasher, where are you? To Mars!

Taken from the headlines, and plausible

I love Bova's ability to tell a realistic story. This volumn suggests that the government will never sponsor a manned mission to Mars, and the protagonist assembles a group of like-minded billionaires to fund the effort. Seems to be ripping the idea from recent headelines, doesn't it? It's a quick read, perhaps in a long single sitting or on an airplane. But it's satisfying, leaving me looking forward to the sequal.

How to get to Mars...
Granskad i USA den 16 april 2014Verifierat köp
I had to read this book for my monthly book club (all women over age 50). I am very curious as to why this book was selected, as it is completely different from anything we have ever read before. A brief synopsis: Art Thrasher, age 55, twice divorced, and already rich, asks several business associates, to put up one billion dollars annually towards his private corporation (Mars, Inc.) dedicated to putting a manned spacecraft for research and exploration on Mars. Plus, he is going to develop and market a personal virtual reality apparatus that will link those on earth to the research facility on Mars and make lots more money. He is able to raise the funds, but has several stumbling blocks to make the endeavor happen. There is corporate intrigue and sabotage and lots of technological language. There is also one profane phrase that is used repeatedly throughout the book. Art travels a lot to make all his deals and confront and negotiate with people. The author is very good at descriptive language, particularly clothing and atmosphere (temperature and weather). There are only four women in the book, and many men. The women, for the most part, have very little impact. If I had hated it, I would not have finished it, but truthfully, it seemed like a book for boys in their late teens or young men. Otherwise, it is easy to read, if you can keep all the names and positions straight. Also, it has a predictable and sappy ending.

Return to Mars
Granskad i USA den 30 januari 2014Verifierat köp
Following the success of his three Mars Grand Tour novels (Mars, Return to Mars, Mars Life), Ben Bova has once again chosen the Red Planet for his newest adventure.
Arthur Thrasher is a billionaire with a dream; a dream of sending humans to Mars. Unfortunately, NASA doesn't have the budget or the time for the mission. Enter Thrasher and his bold plan; enlist the help of other billionaires to finance the project. Free enterprise will send humans to Mars.
Arthur secures the funding and the operation begins. Over the course of five years, Arthur sees his vision grow, from initial planning to design, implementation, and screening of the crew. But there are numerous pot holes along the way, including rivalries among the financiers, sabotage, and murder. Will Arthur see his dream of humans actually landing on Mars?
I'm a big fan of Ben Bova's works, and I thoroughly enjoyed reading "Mars Inc." I thought the storyline was very interesting, and the character development is good. There are numerous twists along the way that keeps the reader guessing as to the final outcome. The ending leaves open the possibility of a sequel, which I hope Bova will consider.
I give "Mars Inc." a very high recommendation. Sci-fi fans will enjoy this very good book from one of the great authors of the genre.
