An extraordinary account of unimaginable suffering and the resilience to get through it. I lived with this book for days, often pausing to try to imagine the horror that Jude coped with. Her strength of mind and physical endurance was like nothing most people could manage. Yet what was the alternative? She had Ollie waiting for her - it may have been a different outcome if Jude had had nobody close to care about her.
The account was riveting in its horror - the huge red caterpillars and hideous infested tree growing in the Horrible House - how on earth did she even dare to go near the hole in the floor lavatory? I was surprised Jude did not seem to get more ill than she did - with such foul "food" I would have imagined her to be permanently sick and not able to keep anything down. The lack of any form of hygiene and clean clothes was appalling, but she obviously kept herself in some sort of condition which enabled her to be rescued with some dignity. It was amazing, too, right from the beginning, that the vicious injuries inflicted on her in the boat seemed to heal up and not leave her damaged and infirm from the start.
The concluding chapters were fascinating in how the FCO etc. worked, and the negotiations taking place behind the scene. More amazing was Jude's tolerance, even compassion, for some of the pirates. As she says, anger and revenge would only deplete her energies more. It is to be hoped that piracy and wickedness will be eradicated at some time. With her wonderful strength of will, Jude should be able to find some peace and as much happiness as possible in the rest of her life.

And there, in the early hours of 11 September, tragedy struck them. Judith was torn away from David by a band of armed pirates, dragged over sea and land to a village in the arid heart of lawless Somalia, and there held hostage in a squalid room, a ransom on her head.

harrowing experience
Granskad i Storbritannien den 22 augusti 2013
Its almost impossible to comprehend what a harrowing & traumatic experience this lady has been through at the hands of Somalian criminals . The book covers the full kidnapping story and you can have nothing but total sympathy for her and equally for her son.
It is incredibly sad, but ultimately the story of the daily grind of life as a prisoner is only really going to be interesting for the reader at the begining and end of the ordeal , as is the case with this book.
I wish Mrs Tebbutt peace and hope she can find happiness again. She deserves admiration.
Most importantly I also hope she makes enough money with this book to recover the ransom that was paid.

Marvellous true account of Judith Tebbut's kidnap and imprisonment by Somali pirates whilst taking a safari holiday in Kenya, and how she endured terrible deprivation & near starvation during her captivity.
This is a story of a courageous and determined woman who refused to be broken by an unimaginable ordeal.
Couldn't put this book down and can't recommend it highly enough.

Very explicit, my heart went out to both mother and son . Her strength of mind was amazing. The importance of daily suctior even though she was in pain she did not give in . She overcame not just pain humiliation, starvation, even tried to gain trust and the nearest thing to friendship ,but never forgetting those people are my enemy they killed my husband. Even when she got home she still had a long way to go. And a long painfully progress. And still she felt the need to help others. Good for her very well done .

A story of great courage.

This is a beautifully written book by Judith Tebbutt and I am so full of admiration for the way she survived such a terrible time. I just wanted to keep reading. My heart goes out to her regarding the loss of her husband. In the face of continuing horror and hardship she kept it together and survived to be back with her family. She writes the account of her ordeal so well that the reader is there with her. A book to keep, to remind me of one woman's courage and hope against a mountain of uncertainty.
