The Flood is a novelisation of the events and expanded plot of the hit Xbox and PC game `Halo: Combat Evolved'. It tells the tale of the Master Chief and UNSC Marines who crash land on the mysterious halo construct and their fight with the Covenant to gain control of the ring.
Books based on games are a difficult thing to get right, but here William Deitz pretty much pulls it off. The Flood is a surprisingly gritty and well-written re-telling of the game's key events, spiced up with plenty of extra backstory. We get to hear about the battles being fought by the Marines as the Master Chief is off on his own missions, plus we see the tale told from the Covenant side.
Most, if not all, of the human forces portrayed in the book are supposed to be the elite Orbital Drop Shock Troopers (ODSTs), or "Helljumpers". This is OK but doesn't really fit with the Marines portrayed in the game, who seem much more like regular grunts.
New characters are introduced well and you care for the people involved. I was very disappointed with the fate of the majority of the humans at the end however. In the game there is virtually no mention (you assume they blew up on Halo, perhaps) but the book gives an explanation which I guess works but seems a bit over the top, plus removes all of the interesting new characters Deitz had created.
Worth a read if you want to find out more about the Halo universe, especially if read in conjunction with the other novels in the series.

Adds to the game storyline nicely
Granskad i Storbritannien den 16 juli 2008Verifierat köp
by filling in the bits inbetween. As other reviewers have said there are sections where having played the game through 3-4 times I can actually 'see' what is being described, but that didn't detract for me making it as strange as 'seeing' scenes from movie novelisations.
Outside of the game storyline the story adds further to the mythos started in Fall of Reach and sometimes answers questions of 'what happened to?' that aren't addressed in the game. No one else does make it off of Halo apart from Cortana and the MC and in this you find out why.
So it isn't high art and will never be considered classical literature, so what? If you like Halo and don't want something that is going to be too mentally taxing then this can only add to your enjoyment if you ever bother to play the game through again.

Great Read.
Granskad i Storbritannien den 28 maj 2018Verifierat köp
The book follows the story of the first game, Halo Combat Evolved. The story explains some of the missing elements from the game. And even explains the Covenant story. Overall the book was well written, but the only issue is how The Chief is characterised very different from Fall of Reach.

If you enjoy books and the halo game you will love the Halo series.
William C Dietz is a well established author who raised the standards and the bar within the warhammer book series. He stood out as a talented author and here is no exception. He brilliantly weaves an exquisite tale around the confines of the actual game play from the Halo games. He follows the Games story line perfectly and manages to write a compelling and intriguing story that compliments the game superbly.

A good book
Granskad i Storbritannien den 1 april 2013Verifierat köp
This book is at times a little too in depth on the technical aspects and not quite enough on the characters. It is still an excellent book but if you have read anything by Eric S Nylund then you will notice the writing styles are completely different. I still recommend reading it if you are a Halo fan as it does cover a lot of the story that's not in the game.
Likes. A good read, adds to the Halo universe by filling in all the details for Captain Keyes. A must read for halo fans.
Dislikes. Not written in the same style as Eric S Nylund, often strays to areas of less interest, the technical aspects.
