Anthony Quinn’s take on THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN in restored Blu-ray
Granskad i Kanada den 30 april 2022
Review of the Warner Archive Collection Blu-ray (2022).
This is a good remaster of an off-beat Euro Pre-western taking place, in Mexico in the 1700s with flintlock weapons instead of six-shooters, which hadn't been invented yet. Weird variation on the SEVEN SAMURAI dynamic reduced to one flawed man. Therefore, a little more emphasis on character than action, though the numerous action scenes and climax are impressive.
Strong performances by Anthony Quinn (GUNS OF NAVARONE), Charles Bronson (THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN) and Sam Jaffe (BEN-HUR).
The Blu-ray image detail is a little on the soft side with natural film grain, and the colour is magnificent. This is the best this film has ever looked!
The aspect ratio is 2.32 widescreen as originally shown in theatres. The sound is bass shy but clear and dialogue is easy to understand, about average for 1968.
The beautiful score by Ennio Morricone (THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY) appears to be in Stereo instead of the typical Mono. Definitely another plus!
The unusual story is quite different than the usual approach taken by the "Spaghetti Westerns" of the time, being a study about conscience and honour, instead of revenge, and is worth a look.
Originally impressed with SEVEN SAMURAI, it was Quinn's idea to remake it as a western. Ultimately his deal fell through, and his proposed film was made as THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN without him, so it appears that he eventually got his wish to be in another version which became this film!

Excellent Transfer To High Definition Blu Ray Format
Granskad i Kanada den 10 januari 2022
A lot of fans have been waiting for a good, high quality, high definition transfer of this classic to blue ray format. Look no further.
Staring Anthony Quin and Charles Bronson as "The Bad Guy", this pre-western takes place in the 1700's and is full of plenty of action, gun battles, canon fire, love, death, and just a hint of "morality" although just a hint.

Filmada en México.
Granskad i Mexiko den 19 mars 2022
