Om författaren

Fiona Valpy spent seven years living in France, having moved there from the UK in 2007. She and her family renovated an old, rambling farmhouse in the Bordeaux winelands, during which time she developed new-found skills in cement-mixing, interior decorating and wine-tasting.

All of these inspirations, along with a love for the place, the people and their history, have found their way into the books she's written, which have been translated into French, Dutch, German, Norwegian, Italian, Czech, Turkish, Lithuanian and Slovenian.

Fiona now lives in Scotland, but enjoys regular visits to France in search of the sun.

2,0 av 5 stjärnor Never quite lived up to its potential.
Granskad i Storbritannien den 17 juni 2020
I feel a little frustrated having just finished this. Parts of it are very well written and very evocative of wartime France, but overall it never quite lived up to its potential.

The story flits back and to between the modern day, where Harriet has sought out a position in Paris in the hope of gaining a better understanding of her own family history and then Paris during the time of the Nazi occupation. Through this process we are taken back to the the struggles of three seamstresses in wartime France. These historical sections are the best parts of the book and I really wanted to be drawn into world and emotions of the young ladies concerned as they faced the challenges of life in Nazi occupied Paris. There was certainly plenty of opportunity for the events to have been poignant and heart wrenching, but it never quite got there. There were some sad moments, but there were too many unnecessary distractions along the way, which diluted the impact. The interspersed chapters giving Harriet's modern day reflections added little more than bulk and just detracted from the build up of any emotional investment in the historical protagonists. I think it would have been better if Harriet's contributions had been restricted to the opening and closing chapters of the book. There were also sections of the story which ventured very much into Mills & Boon territory. These just had the effect of making me switch off and lose interest in the proceedings.
