Don't want to launch into a huge diatribe here BUT...
The story is good. The plot is unique and fascinating. The characters are interesting enough to keep you engaged.
However, Ben Bova writes his female characters as if they're damsels in distress from a 19th century romance novel written by an over-imaginative incell. I got through the first two books, but ended up giving up half-way through the third - couldn't take the way he described the uber-brilliant hyer-educated female protagonist as if she was just waiting around for a man to save her. The minute she falls in love with the main character, she goes from being an accomplished and independent woman with her own views, to a shallow and fainting girl who needs to be carried about like she has no mind of her own and desperately needs a man's validation.
In all honesty, please don't let your kids read this unless you want them to think women are objects that need saving.
