The bad news, for one who has only just encountered her writing, is that so many of Jane Casey’s admirers think this to be her best novel. The good news is that there are many more of her novels to explore. I enjoyed” The Cutting Place” enormously and look forward to coming to grips with the earlier books.
An abstract summary might well suggest that this is a book that is wholly and exclusively concerned with the abuse of and violence towards, women. Certainly, this is a major issue, but it is so convincingly integrated into the fabric of the novel as a whole, that the book rises above any obvious message. It is an impressive crime novel by any standards. The plot is intricate, with plenty of unexpected turns. Even more absorbing are the relationships between the key characters. The tone of the exchanges between Maeve and Josh Derwent is particularly skilfully handled. Yes, at time, all teeters towards sentimentality, but there is more than enough harsh reality to offset that and powerful feeling is balanced with restraint. The book is somewhere between a psychological thriller and a police procedural. In my view it merges the two most successfully.

Great StoryGranskad i Storbritannien den 2 augusti 2020
Another great story, brilliant characters, and again Meave and Josh on the scene. All about a reporter who finds out nasty secrets and killings that go on in a Men's only club, she suddenly disappears and parts of a body are washed up on the shore. It takes a while for them to find out the bones belong to Paige the report who no reported missing until a while after. Then quite a few people come into the picture who could be the killer or killers, they also find out more people have been killed there and bodies disposed of. This will keep you guessing right up to the final chapter, and it doesn't turn out to be the person you think it is, Really gripping book couldn't put it down, can't wait for the next book

This is the first book I have read by this author and was not disappointed. Good writing, enough detail without overdoing it. There are several twists and the perpertrator of the first murder is a surprise, but there are plenty of people it could have been so kept me guessing up to the end. The details of Maeve's personal life is not overdone but without spoiling the plot is quite harrowing towards the end of the book. That part was well written. Will certainly be reading more of these books in the future.

As usual a great book. Good, original storyline, great characters. Just could not put this book down, couldn't wait to get to the end and disappointed when I did, left me wanting more. The sexual tension between Maeve and Will as strong as ever, with the usual excellent one liners. Wanting the two to hook up but knowing if they did the relationship would change forever. The plotting and sub-plotting is clever. I just cannot gush enough...
Not an essential readGranskad i Storbritannien den 22 april 2020
Once upon a time a crime writer must have had the idea that bringing the home life of the investigator into the story was a good idea.It wasn't and still isn't.All it serves to do here is distract for too long from a not especially engrossing plotline. This was the weakest in the series for me and felt as if it was overstaying its' welcome.Which could be the case for Kerrigan too.
