It CAN happen here - some might say that, post-2016, it IS happening here, whether you're in the UK, the US, Hungary, Turkey, etc.
This is a cautionary tale of the electorate getting what it thought it wished for. Written in 1935 amid mounting concern about the intentions of Nazi Germany, it has direct relevance to all democratic regimes at all times, but with a particularly urgent message in current times.
The 1930s writing style and the (at times) pompous-sounding names (Berzelius, Doremus, etc) grate slightly to contemporary ears, but other than that it's a good read.

A vain, outlandish, anti-immigrant, fearmongering demagogue runs for President of the United States - and wins. Sinclair Lewis's chilling 1935 bestseller is the story of Buzz Windrip, 'Professional Common Man', who promises poor, angry voters that he will make America proud and prosperous once more, but takes the country down a far darker path. As the new regime slides into authoritarianism, newspaper editor Doremus Jessup can't believe it will last - but is he right? This cautionary tale of liberal complacency in the face of populist tyranny shows it really can happen here.

An engaging and interesting readGranskad i Storbritannien den 1 maj 2017
Written in 1935, the language in this book is a little dated and quite American. However, it is interesting, not mainly due to similarities with the current rise to power of a populist leader in the US, but due to it having being written only two years after Hitler takes over in Nazi Germany and without the author knowing how that story ends.

Excellent book - somebody should have written a sequel. Even tried casting film version with 1935.actors - film they never had the guts to make. Lewis very perceptive if bit farfetched - why would any government want to promote inflation? Oh - republishing it when Trump elected turned out to be scaremongering and I didn't care much for opposition leader Trowbridge's vision of America either.
This is an amazing book about what could have happened in the US ...Granskad i Storbritannien den 23 maj 2017
This is an amazing book about what could have happened in the US in late 1930s. However, after reading the book you may come to the conclusion that it has happened in the contemporary US. It is a must read and I highly recommend it.

An excellent book, prescientGranskad i Storbritannien den 29 mars 2018
An excellent book, prescient, with some quotable lines and a very important message. However, it's a bit of a slog to read, and if you're looking for something like this but easier to read, then 1984 or Brave New World is probably better. Not a good first step into dystopian fiction, in summary, but definitely worth reading.
