The second installment is just as good as the first, if not better. We get a few more viewpoints in addition to Holden. Prax, a botanist whose search for his daughter is the driver for the plot. Bobby, a Martian marine and Avasarala, a major UN figure. Avasarala is an amazing character, a foul-mouthed, no nonsense figure who basically runs the UN, after watching the show I totally get why she was included from the start. The stakes are raised in this one, we see some great action sequences, and though I thought it was a little slow at the start, the last half of the book flew by. Holden goes through his own character arc, starting off a little jaded, more like Miller. I also really love the crew on the Rocinante, I think it would be cool to get a POV on some of those. The end was suitably spectacular and I can't wait to find out what happens next.
Just a quick note. I watched the show before reading the books and from what I remember I really don't like what they've done with Amos. He's one of my favorite characters in the books and I remember not really liking him in the show. Perhaps I just took up his character wrong in the show but if so it's a real shame. Yeah he's dangerous and you never quite know what he's going to do, but he is loyal to the crew, he's a good guy.

Some of the best sci-fi I've ever read!
Granskad i Storbritannien den 17 augusti 2016Verifierat köp
The second book in the Expanse series of space opera goodness by James SA Corey (the pen name for co-authors Daniel Abraham and Ty Franck), Caliban’s War continues the exploits of likely lad, Jim Holden, and his crew of misfits as they wreak merry carnage across the galaxy. Since the first book, things have become even more volatile, with Earth and Mars going to war and Venus quietly breeding a cross between Ridley Scott’s Alien and George Romero’s zombies. Meanwhile, Holden finds himself wham bam in the middle of it all with a trigger-happy Martian marine, potty-mouthed UN official and wiry little botanist who just wants to find his daughter.
I love these books because they don’t feel like books: it feels more like watching a TV series than reading. And, like all the best TV out there, I just wanted to bomb my way through it all in one sitting.
In short, this is some of the best sci-fi I’ve ever read. If you’re not onboard with this series already, remedy that right now.

Prospero’s book
Granskad i Storbritannien den 23 september 2020Verifierat köp
3/5 • Book 2 of The Expanse series is a little disappointing after the first. The strength of Leviathan Wakes lay in its story, which was compelling throughout and made up for the so-so prose and uninspired characterization. The story here, in CALIBAN’S WAR, is less gripping, although it’s not so bad as to make the book a dud. The prose is still mediocre and one of the most interesting characters from book 1 is now missing. Luckily, Avasarala is introduced (she’s there right from the start in the TV show – another wise move from the producers) and that makes up for this loss to some extent. I think the foremost problem with CW is the main thread of the story. The fate of Mei Meng feels somewhat contrived, and comes across more like a plot device than an organic progression of the series’ arc. The way in which the crew of the Rocinante adopts her irritating father is also a tad hard to swallow. That said I still enjoyed the novel enough to continue with the series, and I know the story improves again because I’ve seen all the TV episodes :)

2&3 are the best of the series
Granskad i Storbritannien den 26 juni 2019Verifierat köp
2&3 are the best of this great action sci-fi series. Reviewing them together as I feel the story is a continuous arc. The writers improve significantly in style and character development over the first book, and expand well on concepts and plot (Avasarala is a sublime creation!). Broader perspectives and more complex plot. All comes together well, and above all feels a believable and logical vision of human society in the future. I never felt the direction of the plot went as well or they explored the full potential of the world they built after these, but these 2 books really hold up.

An absolutely splendid second instalment.

Following straight on from the tumultuous events of the first book of the trilogy, this instalment charts the progress of the mysterious evolving consciousness now established on Venus through the eyes of the main protagonists. Jim Holden and his crew are joined by Prax, a botanist from Ganymede searching for his abducted daughter while on Earth Avasarala, a top Earth government official aided by Bobby, a Martian marine from Ganymede, struggles against political in-fighting and military duplicity to avert the latest threat posed by the exploitation of the protomolecule by another sociopathic corporation. It's impossible to describe events in any greater detail without spoiling the plot, but suffice to say the yarn just piles along at a cracking rate with unexpected little plot twists at every turn. The political intrigue in the Avasarala thread is almost a welcome counterpoint to the frenetic pace of the other narratives but without deadening the overall tempo and it serves to nicely expand the scope of the tale.
A book of this size (about 600 trade format, small print pages) would usually take me ages to finish but I gobbled it up in less than two weeks and, if I hadn't had to sleep and work & do boring things like that, I would have read it in one sitting. It is totally engrossing with an easy, light & witty style - a very rare quality in modern science fiction. The Shakespearian reference to Caliban (the monstrous, barely human resident on the island setting of `The Tempest') is a fine literary allusion which only makes sense at the very last page; nice touch. I sincerely hope we don't have to wait too long for book three (Abaddon's Gate) to round off the trilogy; I'm not sure I can stand the suspense...
