Adrian Tchaikovsky has quickly become my number 1 Science Fiction author in the world at this time.
This story, mostly written in the first person (ala Harry Harrison's Rat!) builds and weaves fantastically in a disturbing but breathtaking view of the distant future.
The narrative is very personal, up close and viscerally described, yet the context amd history only hints at the mighty power and downfall of the civilisation from whence the place setting originates. It's a terrific survival romp.
One of the best compliments I can give A.T. is that, above his clearly fertile imagination and incredibly believable human/non-human lifeforms, his storytelling "writing" quality is now about as good as reading vintage Stephen King. A writer who's vision and skill continues to expand with each book.
I love Iain Banks, and a staple quote on his books used to be from The Times: "There is now no British SF writer to whose work I look forward to with greater keenness".
That phrase now specifically applies to Adrian Tchaikovsky.
