M. R. Carey has been making up stories for most of his life. His novel The Girl With All the Gifts was a USA Today bestseller and is a major motion picture based on his BAFTA-nominated screenplay. Under the name Mike Carey he has written for both DC and Marvel, including critically acclaimed runs on X-Men and Fantastic Four, Marvel's flagship superhero titles. His creator-owned books regularly appear in the New York Times bestseller list. He also has several previous novels, two radio plays, and a number of TV and movie screenplays to his credit.

A " somewhat" dystopian drama

I was surprised to find that the author is British.The book contains a number of annoying Americanisms,including the expression "the longest time",something I have never heard used in the UK.However by far the most annoying word in the book,and it is used very often is "somewhat".Everything seems to be somewhat this or somewhat that.
The story itself is quite interesting.The best character in the book is a Sony super mp3 player who has much more personality than Koli who is oddly wimpish.I am not sure that adding a trans character added anything to the story,other than making it woke.
The story may improve through the trilogy but this book is only a moderate start.

I love this author. The story is set in a dystopian time where technology is only available to the few. Koli is the protagonist and after a struggle sets out to travel in a difficult and dangerous land. Very gripping and imaginative. I can’t wait to read the next book.
