Considering what I paid, these are fantastically good gloves, but they do have some shortcomings:
1. They are very bulky. If I put them in my rook-sack, there isn't much room for anything else.
2. The fastenings on the back of the hands and at the cuff work OK, even using the other hand wearing a mitt. There's a plastic tab that you pull to tighten the cuff and a webbing strip that you pull to loosen it. That said, these things don't work nearly as efficiently as I saw in the You Tube clips.
3. It feels a bit of a squeeze at the half-way point putting your hands in. That's OK - DON'T go up a size otherwise your fingers will not reach the end of the mitt and they will feel even more like oven gloves.
4. Unless it is really cold weather, these get a bit HOT and SWEATY. They are not gortex/breathable. These gloves are really only for temperatures that are freezing or below.
5. There's a felt-like strip on the back of the thumbs to wipe your nose on when it runs. But you don't want to use your new gloves for that do you? Unfortunately, you can't get your hanky out of a pocket wearing the mitts so you end up taking one of them off.
6. The layer next to the skin is a thick furry material. That causes a little friction sliding your hands in and out, especially once they have started to get a little sweaty, and the inner glove wants to start turning itself inside out when you extract your hand.
7. The inner glove is held securely in place with a ring of velcro at the wrist position (nowhere else).
8. If you turn the inner glove inside out so that the silky surface is next to your skin, hands do slide in and out a little more easily.
9. The inner glove has 3 "compartments": one for your thumb, one for your index finger, one for your other three fingers. This is unnecessarily complicated. You always end up putting 4 fingers in the compartment intended for 3 and not using the compartment intended for your forefinger.
10. These mitts will not be fully waterproof. The outer shell has leather on the palm side, well re-inforced at the stress points, some sort of waterproof material on the back and LOTS OF STITCHED SEAMS which are not taped over, and so will eventually let in water. This should not be too much of a concern because if you are out in enough rain, water is going to run down your jacket sleeve into the main opening of the glove anyway!
Having said all that, I still don't know of a better glove. Part of me wants the Marmot 8000 Mitts, they look like wonderful gloves for polar explorers, fully waterproofed gortex outer shell. Definitely not for rambling in the home counties though and very expensive. I would buy these Black Diamond Mitts again.
