I purchased this specifically to deal with a WiFi black-spot where my smart TV sits, and having just set up the system I was astounded at how fast the WiFi in that spot was. Numerous speed tests confirmed I was getting around 50-60Mbps where before we'd struggled to get much more than 5Mbps.
Unfortunately that's where the positives end. Almost immediately I noticed that the 'node' (the unit not directly connected to the broadband) would drop its connection. I submitted a support request to Asus who took a few days to get back to me, asking me to send them the logs that I'd already submitted via their web form. I noted at this time that a new firmware was available and proceeded to update both units with it. After a quick reboot, the speed was once again superb and I thought that may have fixed it.
Further disconnects were experienced so I read some reviews online and noted one user set up a reboot scheduler to reboot the units on a nightly basis. This seemed sensible so I set it up. Initially I thought I'd worked around the issue, not that I should have to work around it but I really wanted it to work, but the disconnects began again and in increasing frequency.
Since then I have exchanged a dozen emails with Asus, sent them numerous logs, enabled the debugging on several occasions, provided them with config files, performed several factory resets and tried to coerce it into working by asking it nicely. (The last point being a hint of sarcasm, as I was in fact getting quite frustrated by this point.)
The final straw was today, 15 May, when I discovered the dedicated WiFi backhaul would no longer function. The node would only connect on 2.4GHz. The unit is being returned and I've requested a refund.
I may have been unlucky and this may simply be a one-off DOA, but Asus support's response has been extremely lacking. It takes days for Asus to respond and it provided no potential solutions when it did respond. I expect more when requesting support on such an expensive piece of hardware.
It's a real shame as, as I said above, it is blisteringly fast when it works.

Easy setup with Vigin Media Hub 3 ......be patient though!
Granskad i Storbritannien den 27 april 2020Modell: WiFi 5Kapacitet: 2er SetFärg: svartVerifierat köp
I have VM Hub 3 on the 350mb fibre and had read stories on the VM forums about issues with some 3rd party routers and Hub 3. From memory i followed this order
1) Login to Hub 3 and set to to modem mode
2) Unbox the 2 units and set about 2 meters apart
3) Plug in AC power (do not switch on)
4) Plug ethernet cable from port 1 in your Hub 3 into the WAN (blue port) on one of the routers
5) Switch on the 2 routers
6) Download the ASUS router app and follow the instructions on screen (takes about 5 min)
7) Login to your router (probably 192.168.50.1) you will see both units
This is where you need to wait, as originally i had no internet access (no external IP showing). I believe there is an intial process of behind the scenes registering your Hub 3 and new router setup with Virgin Media, this took about 10 minutes. If this doesnt work power all units down for a few minutes then turn them back on
At present the 2 routers are joined by the 2nd 5Ghz channel as the backhaul, i intend to hard wire this to free up the more powerful channel.
Internet speeds at my PC which is hardwired to the node, then wireless back to the router (10 meters away upstairs through 1920's solid brick house) are maxed out at 370mb, the same as if i was hardwired directly into the old Hub 3!
Although the coverage is better than my Hub 3, its not as far reaching as i hoped it might be, however it does give me a very strong 5Ghz upstairs. The 2.4Ghz extends even further (as expected) and now has a strong singnal that extends far outside the house
I choose to seperate my 2.4 & 5Ghz with seperate SSIDs
This is only a usable Dual Band router unless you hard wire the 2 units to free up the 2nd 5Ghz channel, making it Tri Band.

Don't believe the hassle free setup

Firstly I'm good with Tech, and let me tell you I have spent 5 hours since unboxing trying to get these things to work. As I own a high end Asus router I stupidly believed the marketing BS videos on YouTube that it was one click on their mobile app to get this set up and working. Far from it.
For a start, the experience shown in their YouTube setup video did not appear for me on my app (it#s the current version). From the off I was deep in configuration menus. After three tedious manual firmware upgrades - one on my router and one on each node (note it only worked on the nodes when hardwired via ethernet to the router)
I then wasted three hours trying to get a stable connection with both nodes simultaneously. I failed. Literally the only way I got get 5 bar signal strength was to have it located about 10 feet from my router, which totally defeated the point of buying these extenders in the first place, and the constant restarted of my router and random kicking off all Wi-Fi clients continued despite everything being on the latest firmware.
The only way I have got some semblance of stability is to connect them via power line adapters using ethernet connections, which is not why I spent £400 on a premium product.
I'll update this review after a few days of living with them. My main goal is to get coverage in the garden. Lets see...
UPDATE after 24 hours.
I have managed to solve the instability issues but not via a necessarily satisfactory outcome. My conclusion is you can not buy these to just use as slave nodes to an existing Asus AI Mesh enabled router. I own a high-end
gaming router (RT-AC5300) and my plan was to extend its reach using both of these as extenders. The only way I have found for it to work is to remove the RT-AC5300 from my setup completely and use one of the ZenWiFi's as my new main router. As someone else mentioned, the complete lack of documentation or online resources doesn't make this clear.

The level of grief that comes with these units is not worth the money (UPDATED)!

This device on paper looks good. The UI on the mobile app and unit configuration web page look polished but this product can be high maintenance and I wouldn’t recommend it to people who want something reliable and just to work.
The first set of ZenWiFi AX (XT8) units I could not get to work together, the node was never found, so these were returned and replaced. The second set I got to work after a couple of attempts. With these units the LED would flash yellow after pushing the reset button, the first set do did not do this.
My wife and I regularly suffer from intermittent ‘Unidentified Network’ problems with our Windows 10 laptops, now although I can’t 100% say it is down to the XT8’s I never had problems on the previous wireless router. I have looked at this issue on-line and none of the stated solutions appear to work. Creating a guest network on the units and switching to that will get you internet access but it is no good for connecting to other devices on your network and the guest network too suffers from intermittent ‘Unidentified Network’ problems.
I have updated the firmware twice on these units; the first time no problem. The second time the wireless network was totally lost and the node would not reconnect. I have found the only way to get these units to work again was to factory reset them. Even if the router comes up you should be able to reset the node and add it; I have never been able to do this and have had to resort to resetting both devices.
The documentation supplied is non-existent and although there is a screen on the app that shows some LED states when you set up the devices it doesn’t show all the states. You will see green on power up (not defined) and once it was pink (again not defined) which I have no idea what that means.
My advice is to stay away from this product until it has been suitably patched. These devices are not cheap and the level of grief that comes with them you should not be getting for the price.
UPDATE (13/10/20):
Full manual is now available on the company website for download.
After its third firmware update stability seems to improved.
Increased to 3 stars. Might reevaluate after longer use of latest firmware version.

Expensive, but does the job

I live in a 2 bed basement flat with my wife a 2 kids.
We now have lots of devices (2 phones, 2 laptops, 1 desktop, 1 tablet and 1 smart TV), I've tried numerous ISP routers and powerline repeaters, all would suffer from intermittent drop outs.
Then I read up about the new Wifi 6 standard, but unfortunately I haven't seen any ISP's offer a router which supports this. The setup is fairly automated but not idiot proof (it's not clear what the steps/options are).
I have kept my ISP router (but have disabled Wifi) and have connected one of these boxes with it with a CAT5 cable. As a parent, I'm much happier with the Parental controls and Content controls that come with this solution.
Pro:
- Ease of setup (once you plug the cables correctly)
- Speed/Reliability
- Control (I considered Netgear, but Parental controls come at an additional subscription cost)
Cons:
- Expensive
- Easy to get setup wrong
- No documentation to perform a factory reset (if you get your initial setup wrong)
