SPOILER ALERT- Like others, I wasn't expecting that this would be as gripping as The Martian, but it wasn't quite as good as I was hoping it would be. I had no empathy for any of the main characters.
It would have been good to see how transport to and from the moon was achieved. There was very little about that. Plus any of the other possible scientific activities that could be undertaken on the moon.
In general, it reads like an outline, probably to meet a publishing deadline, but the story and characters really needed to be fleshed out more.
It is a reasonable read however but I can't say I'll be rushing to buy Andy Weir's next book based on this.

Oh dear, what a dissapointment
Granskad i Storbritannien den 28 oktober 2018Verifierat köp
I was so looking forward to Andys Weir's second book, as like everyone, I absolutely loved The Martian. Without giving anything away in terms of plot, this is a huge dissapointment for a few reasons. The first reason is that the main character, is,well, not really very nice. You dont warm to the character, and I found a lot of her dialogue, well annoying to be honest. It got to the point that I didnt really care whether she survived or not. Ultimately the whole plot is about her trying to do something illegal to make money which is not something that I particular admire - if the character was cool, and someone you could like then maybe that would be ok, but she is not. Second point, the plot is weak and frankly not very interesting. There are a few characters that develop quite well, but mostly the characters are poorly described and not very interesting. The final thing - for me the Moon is well, a dry, dull not very interesting place. Mars is different. Everyone is excited to imagine what might be there and the challenge of getting there. The moon, we know its just a moon and there is nothing there - I think Andy needs to pick a far more ambitious plot for his book - Interstellar travel, going to Venus, I dont know, just something more interesting than, living on the moon.

I enjoyed the grunge-tech feel to life on the moon

The moon has a small town, Artemis, population 2000. Most of the inhabitants are either super-wealthy, or the ordinary blue-collar people keeping the town running, and working as tourist guides. Some are criminals. Jazz is a bit of both: a legitimate porter, and a smuggler to keep the wolf from the door. But she’s making no headway in saving to pay off a big debt, so when one of her super-wealthy smuggling customers offers her what looks like a great deal for some sabotage, she decides to take it. But the job doesn’t go as planned, and soon Jazz is on the run, and the worst is, she doesn’t even know who’s after her! She will need all her moon-smarts just to survive, let alone win out.
This is a fast paced romp, essentially based on a huge McGuffin, but with plenty of engineering know-how needed to solve all the problems. Jazz is a drop-out, which is why she wants money; she also has a well-developed business ethic, which is why she gets into trouble in the first place; she also happens to be an engineering genius, which is how she gets even deeper into trouble.
The book superficially has a YA vibe, but Jazz is not a teenager, she’s in her mid-20s. So occasionally the story and the vibe clash somewhat. However, this is an interestingly-drawn world, both the politics of Artemis, and its Earth-based back story. I enjoyed the grunge-tech feel to life on the moon (although I’m sure there are holes in the engineering, and in the chemistry). And I particularly appreciated how the ending panned out.

Brilliant, hard sci fi thriller
Granskad i Storbritannien den 29 november 2018Verifierat köp
Fair warning: if you bought this because you liked The Martian and were hoping for another one exactly like it, you'll be disappointed. It's SO much better than an identical Martian knock-off. This one's a conspiracy thriller set in the first city on the moon, the titular Artemis. The heroine is wildly different, too: Jaz makes Mark Watney look like a boy scout. She's damaged and deeply flawed; very smart, but her greed steamrollers her common sense every time. Which is how she gets in this mess...
Jaz is a porter, delivering cargo around the lunar city of Artemis. It doesn't pay well, hence Jaz's side hustle of smuggling. It's still not enough, though, so when one of her less-than-legal clients offers her a fortune to commit one major act of sabotage, she can't resist. But after one little mishap, she's on the run from both sides of the law, fighting for the future of Artemis itself.
One thing Andy Weir does very well is communicating the wealth of technical detail required by the hard sci fi setting without giving anyone a headache. It works here, with everything from regulations of EVA tour guides to the plumbing forming a major plot point, culminating in a MacGuffin that actually makes sense. And throughout, the sense of danger and threat ramps up with every scene. Absolutely riveting, would definitely recommend.

A great story, with good characters, and a realistic setting on the moon
Granskad i Storbritannien den 11 juni 2019Verifierat köp
It has a great story, with good characters, and has convincing details about life on a moon base that's still small enough for you to imagine it might exist in 60-70 years time. It was a breath of fresh air to read about life on the moon, with technology not that far beyond what we have, rather than some far future setting & unfamiliar technology needed to settle on Mars or beyond the solar system.
Although I'd class this as "hard SF", it's still easily accessible for a wider audience, as the science is not in your face the whole time, but rather is deftly weaved into the background - where you can mostly ignore it if you aren't interested, but there's still enough details if like me you are interested.
The political situation is rather different to what you might expect, but it's required for the story, and is still plausible enough (as much as anything can be when set sufficiently far in the future).
The story & characters are quite different to The Martian, and yet there are similarities, with the main character needing to be resourceful & (to a certain extent) being alone & at risk of dying to the dangers of space. As well as being set close enough in the future that it seems possible you might see it happen.
